PROCEDURES AND POLICIES FOR MAINTAINING AND UTILIZING PHYSICAL, ACADEMIC AND SUPPORT FACILITIES

Karnataka Sangha’s Manjunatha College of Commerce owns and operates an extensive infrastructure to deliver its teaching, learning and research programmes. The College has an established system for maintenance and utilization of computers, classrooms, equipments and Computer laboratories. This document outlines the allocation effective use and maintenance of existing infrastructure facilities.

Maintenance of Physical Facilities

Housekeeping services are outsourced on annual contract basis and the housekeeping staff is available on all days for maintaining campus cleanliness. The maintenance committee members monitor the maintenance and cleanliness of the classrooms, computer labs, furniture, campus, sports facilities, staff room, Girls’ and Boys’ common rooms and the canteen.

Maintenance of Classrooms, Furniture Laboratories and Auditorium

Classrooms with furniture and teaching aids are maintained by the peons and supervised by the senior teaching faculty. After the last lecture, the support staff checks the classrooms for damage, if any. They switch off the ACs, fans and lights and lock the classrooms. The computer laboratories are supervised by the computer faculty. Minor repairs are brought to the notice of college office who address them on priority basis. Cleanliness of Seminar halls and auditorium is done by the housekeeping team.

Utilization of Classrooms, Furniture, Laboratories and Auditorium

Students, who utilize the classrooms, are instructed to take care of the furniture and equipments. Computer laboratories are available for practical classes as well as for undertaking projects or assignments. College auditorium is used for academic meetings, seminars, conferences, guest lectures, debates, quizzes, group discussions, workshops, NSS and Students’ Council meetings, activities and competitions and other socio-cultural events.

Maintenance of Library and Library Resources

The library staff is given clear instructions regarding the care and handling of library documents, furniture, computers and printers and all precautionary measures are taken. The shelves are not fully packed to prevent injuries to the spine when the library staff tries to remove a volume. Huge volumes are kept flat. Regular cleaning of accumulated dust prevents document damage. In addition to proper cleaning, fumigation and exposure to sunlight, pest management through the use of repellants and naphthalene balls prevents damage from rats, cockroaches and silverfishes. Fire Extinguisher cylinders in the library are regularly refilled to deal with any fire emergency. Latest Antivirus Softwares are installed in all the library computers and computers, printers and scanners are regularly serviced through AMC. Well-equipped with high internet speed through broadband internet facility, the library is also automated through SOUL 2.0 software from INFLIBNET. Annual Stock verification is done to find missing and/or lost books and a detailed report is submitted for necessary action.

Utilization of Library and Library Resources

All can read newspapers, magazines and journals in the Reading Room. Bound volumes (back issues) of important journals are kept for reference. Books, journals and magazines are issued to Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff. Enrolled Students get a library card and a book is issued to them for a week. Students can also refer to reference books, projects/assignments and previous years’ question papers. Students as well as teachers make use of the Internet facility for completing their academic assignments or research papers. NLIST password is provided for easy access to electronic resources.

Maintenance of ICT Facilities

The Computer faculty, along with the AMC personnel, maintains the ICT facilities including computers and servers. For proper maintenance of the computers, annual maintenance contract (AMC) is given. The engineers address any software or hardware issues. Regular servicing of electronic gadgets like projectors, computers, printers, photocopiers reduces e-waste.

Utilization of ICT Facilities

The Computers are extensively used by both students and staff in their day to day work. The two computers labs enable the students to prepare power point presentations for their projects or to complete their assignments. Faculty uses projectors and Internet facility in the classrooms for the effective teaching.

Maintenance of Research Center:

Research and Teaching-Learning Process are linked aspects of sustainable and developed Higher Education Institutions. Quality Research work translates into quality Teaching-Learning Process resulting in benefits for the students, the community and the nation. The college became a recognized centre for PhD inBusiness Economics under the guideship of Principal Dr.V.S.Adigal from 2017-2018.The research centre is equipped with computers, printer, scanner, internet facility, AC and a Xerox machine. Efforts are put in for maintaining these facilities.

Utilization of Research Center

The registered Ph.D. students can access the above facilities for quality research work in addition to the college library facilities. The research center enables academic interactions and exchanges augmenting research opportunities, academic excellence, real-world problem solving, and knowledge building and dissemination.

Maintenance of Sports Facility

The sports and fitness equipments, gymnasium, grounds and various courts are supervised and maintained by the Sports in-charge. College Support staff, vendors of Sports goods and students jointly maintain the sports equipments. Seasonal maintenance of all equipments is done regularly by the Physical Education students as part of their curriculum.

Utilization of Sports Facility

Students can use all the Sports facilities during the free lectures or after college hours. They can play indoor games like Chess, Carrom and Spell-O-Fun in the Gymkhana located next to the canteen. They can also play badminton, volley ball and traditional games like kabaddi and khokho in the college campus under the supervision of the Physical Instructor. Annual Sports Meet is conducted by booking the Sports Ground in Dombivli Gymkhana. The winners are felicitated either on the same day or during the Annual Prize Distribution Day ‘TARANG’.

Maintenance of CampusCleanliness

Cleaning of the campus is done daily by the housekeeping team. Toilets are cleaned thrice a day. The whole campus area is maintained by the housekeeping team who give a report of the completion of work to the office.

Maintenance of other amenities

The College has given AMCs for regular servicing of water purifiers, fire extinguishers and ACs.

Utilization of other amenities

Safe drinking water facility is provided by installing water vending machines on each floor. Separate water dispensers are installed in the staff room and College office. Air Conditioners are installed in the Self Finance Classrooms, Computer labs and the Administrative for creating a conducive learning atmosphere for the students and a better workplace for the administrative staff.

Day to Day Emergency Maintenance

Day to day maintenance includes running repairs like replacing bulbs and fans, repairing leakages (water pipes, taps, valves and cisterns), cleaning blocked drains, repairing locks and door handles. Other minor maintenance checks are regularly done by the maintenance committee.

A] Restricted entry of automobiles (policy decision): –

College restricts the entry of students’ motor vehicles. Students allowed to park their vehicles outside the campus. College teaching and non-teaching staff is only allowed to park their vehicles inside the college premises.
The security Guards are instructed to strictly observe that the students will park their motorized vehicles outside the college premises without creating nuisance to residents and even create traffic congestion to pedestrian. However, the entry of vehicles of students with disability is permitted.

B] Ban on use of Plastic: –

The placards are being put up about “No Plastic zone” in corridor, canteen and in the front open space of college premises. Even students are given clear instructions not to through any plastics items within college premises. Proper dustbins for dry and wet wastes are kept near canteen. Staff members and students are asked to bring the waste plastics from their home and put up same in dry dustbin. College intern will hand over the collected plastic toUrjaa foundation—Ek Prayas [a nonprofit NGO collecting plastic from Dombivli region and send it to Poly diesel manufacturing company at Pune.] College is proposed to go for an MOU with Urjaa Foundation in the academic year 2021-2022.

C] Landscaping with trees and plants: –

In the limited space available in and around the college premises decorativeplants are planted. The maintenance of these plants is done volunteers and support staff. Steps have been initiated to create a vertical garden in the premises during the Academic year 2021-22.

Energy Conservation (Policy Decision)

Replacing traditional tub lights– Use LED tube lights by replacing traditional types of tube lights within college premises.

Inculcation of habit among students– “One whoever will be coming last from the classrooms has to switch off the lights” The small boards denoting the clear instructions has to be put up in every room

Use of Non-conventional energy sources – In due course of time solar energy panels will be installed

Policy documents to support Disabled-Friendly- Barrier Free Environment

There are very few Divyanjan who secures their admission in the institute. However, for physically challenged students the provisions are made.

  • As per the University of Mumbai guidelines, separate seating arrangement with one supervisor and provision with extra time has to be given during the
